The Way, The Truth And The Life

The Way, The Truth And The Life

• True or false: It doesn’t matter what you believe about God, as long as you believe something. Explain your answer.

• How would you explain John 14:6 to a Muslim or a Buddhist?

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
John 14:6

Jesus’ words in John 14:6 are what separate Christianity from every other religion in the world. For that reason, they’re also probably some of the most controversial sentences in all Scripture.

Few people like to be told that there’s only one way to do something. The natural response is to disagree and offer several alternatives. That’s certainly what happens when talk turns to religion. When Jesus says, “No one comes to the Father except through me,” many people say, “Oh, yeah? What about Islam and Buddhism and Hinduism?” They don’t like the idea of one group of people having exclusive rights to heaven. And they especially don’t like the idea of one group believing that they are right and everyone else is wrong. That’s why spiritual discussions often turn into heated debates or shouting matches.

As Christians, we should be aware of people’s feelings about this topic, but we should never back away from the truth of John 14:6. We should learn to present the truth in a way that invites discussion instead of argument. And we should always be prepared to explain why Jesus, and Jesus alone, is the way to salvation.

PRAYER
Dear God, we praise you for giving us what no one else could—salvation. You alone are the path to heaven. No one comes to the Father except through Jesus. Please help us to share this truth with others. Amen.
