The One Who Is Knowable
• How would your friends describe you? Would you describe yourself the same way?
• What’s the best way to get to know someone?
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.
Ephesians 1:17
God is infinite; humans are extremely limited. God exists outside of time; humans live only in the present. God is beyond imagination; humans know only what our brains tell us. God is a spirit; humans can see only physical things. How can we possibly know anything about God?
First, we can know God because he has made the effort to reveal himself to us. He gave us his Word, which tells us what he’s done and what he will do. He communicates to us through our limited senses, the only way we can understand him.
Second, we can know God because we are created in his image. The fact that we can think and love and make our own choices reflects our likeness to God. When we see those aspects of ourselves, we understand a little more about him.
Third, we can know God because he doesn’t change. The information we have on him will always apply. He is now as he always has been and as he always will be.
The opportunity to get to know God and form a personal relationship with him is the greatest invitation we’ll ever receive. If you’ve already accepted it yourself, you probably know others who haven’t. How can you help them get to know God?
PRAYER
Dear God, we praise you for your unchanging nature. Thank you for not making us guess at how you feel or what you’re like. Thank you for allowing us to know you. Amen.
