Cover Me

• Which of your friends is most likely to have your back when you really need it?

• If you know the Holy Spirit is protecting you, how might that change the way you live?

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
Acts 4:31

If you’re watching a police drama, war movie or western, there’s a good chance there will be a scene where the good guys get pinned down by gunfire. They’ll be trapped behind a car or in a building with bullets flying all around them.

One person—usually the star—will volunteer to run out into the gunfire to get help or to get a better position on the bad guys. And that’s when they’ll turn to the others and say, “Cover me.” In other words, “Give me the protection I need in order to do something brave.”

That’s what the Holy Spirit does for us. It’s risky to be a Christian. People may not fire actual bullets at us, but they will oppose us, challenge us and mock us. And when we’re under attack, it’s tempting to just lay low and protect ourselves.

With the Holy Spirit behind us, though, we can take risks. We can be bold in representing Christ because we know he’s covering us. He has our back.

PRAYER
Dear God, thank you for giving us your Holy Spirit. Encourage us to act boldly in our faith, knowing the Holy Spirit is protecting us. Amen.
