Established By God
• How does God feel about governmental laws?
• When is it okay to break the law?
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended.
Romans 13:1 -3
Second Corinthians 6 tells us that, as followers of Jesus, Christians must be careful not to do anything to discredit Jesus’ name. We need to be aware that the world is watching us and learning about God through us. It is important that we act like model citizens, obeying the laws of the government and submitting to the government’s authority.
God is the ultimate authority, and he is well aware of everything that is going on. We need to trust that he is in control. When we rebel against the government, we rebel against God.
The only exception to this rule would be if the government asked us to sin. In this case, we would follow God’s law instead of the government’s law. But in every other case, we are to obey the government’s laws. We are submit in order to bring honor to God’s name.
PRAYER
Dear God, please help us to obey the law—both governmental laws and your laws. Please help us to bring nothing but honor and glory to your name. Amen.
