A Comforter For All Seasons
• What do you know about the Trinity? What’s the difference between God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit?
• What does the Holy Spirit do?
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever.”
John 14:16
As Jesus was preparing for the end of his life, his disciples were understandably upset. With Jesus gone, who would guide them, teach them, and make them feel better in times of trouble? The Lord eased his disciples’ fears by promising them the Holy Spirit—also called the Comforter—who would do for them in spirit what Jesus did for them in the flesh.
That same Holy Spirit accompanies believers today. The fact that we cannot see him does not make him any less real. His work is vital to us. If we don’t recognize his presence in our lives, we may fool ourselves into thinking that we’re alone when tough times come. And that would be a terrible mistake.
The apostle Paul gave this encouragement: “Do not be anxious about anything but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). If we turn to God for help, the Holy Spirit will give us peace, even in the midst of suffering. That’s his promise to us.
PRAYER
Dear God, thank you for giving us your Holy Spirit. Remind us always that he offers constant comfort and healing when we need it most. Amen.
