A Group Effort
• What’s the best thing to share? Why?
• Is there such a thing as being too generous with your money or possessions? Explain.
All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.
Acts 2:44-45
Ten days after Jesus ascended to heaven, his disciples gathered in Jerusalem with thousands of other Jewish people for the day of Pentecost. During the celebration, Peter stood up and preached an incredible sermon about Jesus. He told the crowd exactly who Jesus was and what he’d done. God used that sermon to bring 3,000 people to Christ.
Naturally there was a lot of excitement in that group. They’d given their lives to Jesus, but they wanted to do more. They were excited to show how much they loved him. So they put their money to use, taking care of their fellow believers’ needs. Then they sold their houses and possessions, and they used that money to help each other too.
That’s how the first church started—with a group of people helping one another and meeting each other’s needs. God blessed their generosity with some of his own. He added to their numbers every day, and Christianity took root throughout the world.
How far should we go to help fellow Christians who are in need? What sacrifices could we make to care for others? What kind of giving are we capable of?
