Family Resemblance
• Which family member do you look or act most like?
• When is it a good thing to resemble someone and when is it a bad thing?
Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children.
Ephesians 5:1
Like it or not, all kids get traits from their parents. Biological children inherit physical features such as hair color and body types. Adopted children or foster children inherit worldviews, attitudes and ways of speaking. If you look closely at yourself, you’ll see plenty of evidence of the people who are raising you. In some cases, that’s a good thing. In others, it’s not so good.
But our parents aren’t the only ones with whom we share similarities. The Bible says we’re created in God’s image. That means we’re like him in many important ways. For example, our creativity is a reflection of him, the ultimate Creator.
We have the opportunity to be even more like him—in the way we act, the way we think, the way we treat others and the way we treat his Word. We can choose to play up our resemblance by following his instructions and staying close to him. Or we can separate ourselves by doing what we want to do.
The question is, when people look at your life, do you want them to see your heavenly Father?
PRAYER
Dear God, thank you for creating us in your image. Thank you for making us your children. Never let us lose sight of what a privilege that is. Amen.
