Everyday Holiness
• Why don’t Christians stop sinning after they become saved?
• How can God accept you if you still sin?
He gave me the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:16
When we repent of our sins and give our lives to Christ, God forgives us of all our wrongdoings. But that’s not the end of our struggle with sin. Instead, it’s the beginning of our sanctification. To be sanctified is to be continually freer from sin and more and more like Christ in our lives. As followers of Jesus, our goal is to be more like him every day. That’s not easy, since he was perfect.
In order to be like Jesus, every day we must do battle with sin. Our enemy, the devil, makes that battle as difficult as he can. He wants us to sin. That’s why he does everything in his power to make sin seem inviting or easy or rewarding.
In order to stand up to such a powerful enemy, we need an even more powerful ally. That’s where the Holy Spirit comes in. The Holy Spirit sanctifies us. He works in our lives to help us resist sin and become more like Jesus every day.
The Holy Spirit lets us know when we do wrong. He works through our consciences to show us the right thing to do. He helps us recognize the Lord’s will. He helps us see God-pleasing alternatives in tempting situations.
PRAYER
Dear God, thank you for giving us your Holy Spirit to sanctify us. Bless our efforts to be more like Jesus. Amen.
