God Offers Rest
Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.
Psalm 62:1
Between 1861 and 1865, U. S. President Abraham Lincoln is reported to have said, “I am the tiredest man on earth.” The photographs from the period bear this out—a care-worn president clearly haunted by the horror of a nation at war.
Ever feel deeply burdened? “Bone-tired” (as they say in the Deep South)? “Chewed up and spit out”?
Such weariness can be spiritual, emotional or physical. But in any case, the effect is debilitating. Weary souls feel like they are carrying the world on their shoulders.
Chased by Saul and later carrying the weight of a nation as its king, David knew what weariness was like. He also knew where he could find the ultimate rest: in God.
Feeling weary? You can find “rest in God.”
GOD’S PROMISE TO ME
• I see when you are weary and weighed down.
• I want to help you.
• I will give your soul rest if you come to me.
MY PRAYER TO GOD
Lord, I want to trade my heavy burden for the lighter load that you offer. If I am exhausted, maybe it’s because I’m not wearing your yoke. Show me how and where I am carrying burdens you did not intend me to bear.
