God Is Good
Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.
Psalm 25:8
What do we mean when we say that the Lord is good? In Mark 10:17-18 Jesus has an interesting exchange with a man. When the young man came running up to Jesus and called him “Good teacher,” he heard this response: “ ‘Why do you call me good?’ Jesus answered. ‘No one is good—except God alone.’ ”
God’s goodness is expressed in showing the proper path to those who go astray. Who goes astray? Everyone! “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). And what did God do? “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). We do not need to be good enough for God; God’s goodness is good enough for us. Because God is good, he sent his Son to a sinful world and took on sin itself so that we might become God’s children.
Today let’s revel in the truth that God is good and we don’t have to be good enough for him. His goodness has provided everything we need.
GOD’S PROMISE TO ME
• I am perfectly good. Everything I do is good and right.
• When you go astray, I will show you the proper path.
MY PRAYER TO GOD
Thank you, Lord, for your goodness. Because you are good, you came to a sinful world to die for me. Because you are good, you show the proper path to those who go astray. Because you are good, I don’t have to strive to be “good enough” in order to be acceptable to you.
