I Will Glory In The Lord

I Will Glory In The Lord

Because of him … you are in Christ Jesus … Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord”.
1 Corinthians 1:30-31

Prestige and pride. They often go together. The city of Corinth provides a case in point.

A crossroads of trade and transportation, Corinth became a first-century boomtown. Gold was abundant—and with it came a kind of “fool’s gold” glory based on human wisdom and material prosperity.

Jonathan Edwards comments on Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians and the problem of misplaced pride.

WALK WITH JONATHAN EDWARDS
“Let us exalt God alone and ascribe to him all the glory of redemption.

“Man is naturally prone to exalt himself and depend on his own power or goodness. But this chapter should teach us to exalt God alone, not only by trust and reliance, but also by praise: ‘Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.’

“Do you have hope that you are converted, that your sins are forgiven, and that you have been received into God’s favor and are his child, an heir of eternal life? Then give God the glory!

“If you excel in holiness, take no glory to yourself, but ascribe it to him whose workmanship you are.”

WALK CLOSER TO GOD
From a human perspective, the Corinthians had much to brag about.

But God sent his Son to save not those who gloried in their achievements but those who willingly acknowledged they were “foolish … weak … lowly … despised … that no one may boast before him” (1 Corinthians 1:27-29).

What a glorious thought!

God saved you—” foolish” sinner that you were—that you might become a trophy of his love, a mirror of his glory.

You can reflect his glory back to him right now by giving thanks for his grace on your behalf.
