Words of the Wise

Words of the Wise

Listen to the words of the wise; apply your heart to my instruction. For it is good to keep these sayings deep within yourself, always ready on your lips. I am teaching you today—yes, you—so you will trust in the Lord. Proverbs 22:17-19

What a wondrously encouraging thought that God desires to write his ways and words on our hearts. How amazing it is to think that the God we serve, the One who commands the winds and the waves and the whole universe, also commits himself to being our personal instructor and guide! We have only to apply our hearts to his instruction, to present ourselves before him. He not only takes the initiative but also promises to teach us. How do we “apply our hearts”? By doing our part to read the Bible regularly and to meditate on his unchanging principles. By learning to listen to those who are wise, that is, those who know and live by God’s truth and have grown in the wisdom and knowledge of God. Then we won’t have to muster up deeper trust in God. We won’t have to strive for wisdom—because, as this verse tells us, God himself will teach us and lead us to a wholehearted trust in him.

Prayers:
THANK YOU, FATHER, for your desire and willingness to teach me today. You call me to rest in the fact that you take responsibility for instructing me, just as a loving earthly father instructs his own children. Plant your truth deep within me so that your name will always be on my lips. As I apply my heart and mind to your Word, bring me into a deeper trust in you.

Quotes:
THE SACRED PAGE IS NOT MEANT TO BE THE END, BUT ONLY THE MEANS TOWARD THE END, WHICH IS KNOWING GOD HIMSELF.
A. W. Tozer (1897–1963)
