Calling The Plays

Calling The Plays

• Who is the best coach you ever had?

• Why is it sometimes tempting to ignore a coach’s advice?

I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it through the Holy Spirit.
Romans 9:1

In Softball or baseball, coaches give signals to batters and base runners from their positions next to first base and third base. In football, offensive coordinators use a sound system in the players’ helmets to give instructions from a booth high above the field. In basketball, coaches call out plays from the sidelines.

The coaches are experts. They have experience, and they can see the big picture. They know what a player has to do to help the team win. The players who follow their coaches’ instructions are the ones who succeed. The ones who ignore their coaches usually don’t last long.

As Christians, we too have a Coach—a Coach who has a perfect view of our lives, a Coach who knows exactly what we should and shouldn’t do, a Coach who offers instructions constantly. The Holy Spirit is our Coach, and the way he communicates is through our conscience.

He nudges us when it’s time to take a stand. He triggers guilt feelings when it’s time to repent. He gives us a sense of peace inside when things get intense outside. And if we follow his lead, we will have success in pleasing God.

PRAYER
Dear God, thank you for being our Coach and for showing us how to succeed. Please help us remember your instructions. Amen.
