Goal!

Goal!

• What was the last goal you set for yourself? Did you reach it? If so, how? If not, why not?

• What did you learn from that experience that you can use the next time you try to achieve a goal?

In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:6

Ready or not, for most of us the new school year is starting up. And with it comes a whole new set of opportunities. If we take advantage of them, we could have the best year yet. The secret is setting the right goals. Here are some things to consider in planning goals for the year.

First, remember your priorities. God comes first. That’s important because Proverbs 3:6 says if you put him first, he will help you with everything that comes after. If you’re setting goals, it’s good to have the all-knowing Creator of the universe helping you.

Second, be realistic. Consider your schedule. If your goals require a lot of time, figure out where it will come from. What might you need to sacrifice in order to work toward your goals?

Third, stretch yourself. Step outside your comfort zone. Test yourself for skills you may not be aware of. Try out for a play. Join a club. Run for student council.

Fourth, do not let failure have the last word. If you set ambitious goals, you may not accomplish them on your first try—or your second or third. That doesn’t make you a failure. Learn from your mistakes, adjust your strategies and try again.

PRAYER
Dear God, thank you for the new school year and the fresh start it gives. Give us the wisdom to choose goals that honor you, as well as the strength and endurance to reach them. Amen.
