God Speaks
• How does God speak through the Bible?
• If someone claims to speak for God, how do you decide whether to believe that person?
In the past, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.
Hebrews 1:1-2
In the past, God spoke to people through his prophets. When the Israelites or other people did evil in his sight, God sent specially selected men and women to warn them about his coming judgment. Sometimes the people listened and repented. Other times they ignored the prophets and suffered the consequences.
God also spoke through angels. When he had a special message to convey, he used angels to deliver it in person. Abraham, Daniel, and Jesus’ mother, Mary, all received messages from angels. Mary’s message foretold Jesus’ birth.
When God sent Jesus, he gave humankind its clearest and best messenger. Jesus is better than prophets and angels because he doesn’t speak for God; he speaks as God. John 1:1 tells us Jesus is the Word. Every word he speaks is from the mouth of God. If we live according to Jesus’ words—if we think of ourselves and treat others as he instructs—we will please God.
We are blessed because we don’t have to rely on prophets or angels to receive the voice of God. All we have to do is pick up the Bible and read Jesus’ words.
PRAYER
Dear God, we have done nothing to earn your love and concern. Yet you speak to us through your Son and through your Word. Thank you for communicating with us. We would be lost without you. Amen.
