Stating The Obvious
• Why does worship sometimes seem stale and boring?
• What can you, or our whole family, do to make worship more exciting and alive?
Ascribe to the LORD, you heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.
Psalm 29:1-2
In Revelation 4, the apostle John describes God’s throne in heaven. He uses the image of precious stones to describe the one sitting on the throne, since God can’t be seen directly. Surrounding God’s throne are 24 other thrones with 24 elders sitting on them. Positioned around God’s throne are four living creatures covered with eyes. “Day and night they never stop saying: ‘“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,” who was, and is, and is to come’“ (Revelation 4:8).
At the sound of their voices, the 24 elders fall down and worship him with these words: “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being” (Revelation 4:11).
Why do the creatures and elders do it? They can’t help themselves. Being in God’s presence, seeing his perfection and holiness up close, is so awe-inspiring that they have to keep praising and worshiping him. The excitement we feel when we see something incredible is a small sample of what these worshipers feel all the time. What would it take for us to feel that same kind of excitement when we worship God? How can we become more awestruck when we praise him?
PRAYER
Dear God, we join with the creatures and elders around your throne in worshiping you. We are awestruck by your holiness and your goodness. We will praise you forever in this life and the next. Amen.
