Take Me To Pilate

Take Me To Pilate

• Why did the Jewish religious leaders hate Jesus so much?

• Why did Pilate allow him to be crucified if he knew Jesus was innocent?

When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”
Matthew 27:24

The Jewish religious leaders were the ones who wanted Jesus dead. But they didn’t have the authority to execute him. At that time, Israel was part of the Roman Empire. Only a Roman official could sentence Jesus to death.

Pilate was the Roman governor of that region, so Jesus was taken to him. The Jewish leaders explained why they wanted him dead, but Pilate wasn’t convinced. He took the matter to a crowd of Jews. He offered to let one prisoner go, and they could choose: Jesus or Barabbas, a criminal. The crowd, influenced by the religious leaders, chose Barabbas and demanded that Pilate execute Jesus.

To prevent a riot, Pilate agreed. But he washed his hands first in front of the crowd to show that he was innocent of Jesus’ death. He didn’t want Jesus’ blood on his hands.

Even people who don’t believe Jesus is the Savior or Son of God recognize something special in him. Pilate recognized his innocence. Other people recognize that he was a great teacher or a caring leader. This Easter season, let’s think about what we can do to help our friends and loved ones recognize the truth about Jesus.

PRAYER
Dear God, your Son made an impression on everyone he encountered. Give us the wisdom, courage and creativity to help others understand why he continues to make an impression. Amen.
