The Apple Of Your Eye

The Apple Of Your Eye

• How would life be different if you did not have the Bible?

• How do you avoid temptation?

My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you. Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.
Proverbs 7:1-3

In these verses from Proverbs, King Solomon was teaching young men how to avoid temptation. And his words still apply to us today. We are to store up his commands within us. God’s wisdom will keep us alive and well.

Today, “the apple of my eye” is a common phrase used to describe something precious. But it used to refer literally to the pupil of the eye. Because eyesight is so important, people began to also use the phrase to describe something that was incredibly important to them. This is how important God’s commands should be to us. They are precious. They are important. Without them, we are blind.

We are also to bind the commands on our fingers. Imagine wearing Solomon’s God-given wisdom engraved on rings. Not only would you be adorning yourself with God’s commandments but you would also be able to read them at any time.

We are to write God’s commands on the tablets of our hearts. When the Bible talks about our “heart,” it’s talking about our very being, the deepest part of us. This, ultimately, is the place we need to keep God’s wisdom.

PRAYER
Dear God, thank you for the wisdom you have provided us through your Word. Please help us to write this wisdom in our hearts and to live by it every day. Amen.
