The Discerning Get Guidance

The Discerning Get Guidance

• Do you consider yourself to be a wise person? Why or why not?

• What are some of the steps you take when you make a decision?

Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.
Proverbs 1:5

One of the biggest decisions we have to make in life is what to do after high school. And because this decision is such a difficult one, schools have guidance counselors. Schools don’t expect students to make these decisions on their own.

We face many difficult decisions in life, but God doesn’t expect us to make them on our own either. In this verse from Proverbs, King Solomon tells us that discerning people should get guidance.

This means that if we are smart, we will ask for guidance from other people who love God. Don’t underestimate the experience of your friends and family. There’s a good chance that someone you know has had to make a decision similar to the one you are facing.

You might consider asking your parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, teachers, pastors, coaches — anyone who loves God and will want to help you grow in your faith. Two (or three or four) heads really are better than one. You don’t have to make difficult decisions alone.

PRAYER
Dear God, please give us the courage to ask for advice when we need it. Lead us to people who will give us wise guidance. Thank you for the good advisers in our lives. Amen.
