• Why couldn’t the Jewish religious leaders recognize the truth about Jesus?

“You have said so,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
Matthew 26:64

After Jesus was arrested, he was brought before Caiaphas, the Jewish high priest, and the teachers of the Law. They were the ones people turned to for spiritual guidance before Jesus came. And they hated Jesus for exposing them as hypocrites. More than anyone else, they wanted Jesus dead.

They pretended to have a trial, but it was rigged. The only witnesses they could find were false ones. So the high priest asked Jesus point-blank if he was the Messiah, the Son of God. When Jesus said that he was, the high priest accused him of blasphemy and sent him to the Roman governor named Pilate to be executed.

The high priest and his associates were the religious leaders of Israel. They spent their lives looking forward to the Messiah’s coming. Yet when the Messiah was standing right in front of them, they didn’t recognize him. After all of Jesus’ miracles and teachings, he was just a blasphemer in their eyes.

In order to recognize Jesus for who he really is, you have to have faith. The Jewish leaders of Israel didn’t have it. It’s amazing what people can overlook even when there’s so much evidence to support it. Keep that in mind when you talk to your unbelieving friends and family members.

Dear God, thank you for opening our eyes to the truth about your Son. Use us to help open other people’s eyes to him. Amen.
