Unfailing Love, Great Compassion

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin … Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Psalm 51:1-2,10

King David had sinned with Bathsheba. He then sent her husband, Uriah, to the front of the battlefield and ordered the other soldiers to move away from him so that he would be killed.

This story is one of the most scandalous stories in the Bible. It would be difficult to bounce back after a sequence of such sins, but as we see in Psalm 51, David did. David fell to his knees and prayed to God. David begged God for mercy, believing in God’s unfailing love and great compassion.

If David could confess his awful sins and be forgiven, then so can we. God promises that he will forgive our sins. All we have to do is ask. No matter what you’ve done, you too can count on God’s unfailing love and great compassion. No matter what offense you’ve committed, you can be forgiven. All you have to do is confess your sins to God and ask for his forgiveness.

Dear God, thank you for your unfailing love and great compassion. Please forgive us of our sins and renew a steadfast spirit within us. Amen.
