Becoming Like Christ In Humility

Becoming Like Christ In Humility

Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 18:4

The disciples had asked Jesus a question: “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” (18:1). In response, Jesus brought a child into their midst and explained that they needed to become as humble as little children. What did he mean?

Jesus said of himself, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:29). Paul wrote, “Have the same mindset as Christ Jesus … He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness” (Philippians 2:5,7).

To be humble like a child is to have a sincere and trusting heart. That kind of faith pleases Jesus. As children trust and depend on their parents, so we can completely trust and depend on God. Children aren’t concerned about climbing the ladder of success or where they are in the social strata, and we shouldn’t be either. As children, we can be more concerned about living for God and humbly serving others than about our own “position.”

GOD’S PROMISE TO ME
• As you humble yourself before me, you become great in my kingdom.

MY PRAYER TO GOD
You promise, Father, that those who are humble will be the greatest in your kingdom. I pray that my humble faith and service to you will accomplish great things for your kingdom.
