God Brings Light To Your Darkness

God Brings Light To Your Darkness

If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
Psalm 139:11-12

Psalm 139 is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and beloved passages in the Bible.

David reflects first on the fact that God knows, not just all things (see verses 1-6), but all things about him. This sobering truth seems to make David uneasy. It’s as if he wants to run from God and hide. But quickly David realizes there’s nowhere he can go where God is not (see verses 7-12).

Even overwhelming darkness cannot separate us from God, David says, because he is by nature light. There is no such thing as darkness where God is concerned.

This theological truth is comforting whether the darkness in which we find ourselves is self-chosen or the result of hard, painful circumstances beyond our control. Either way, God’s very presence brings light—clarifying, guiding light. In God’s light, we see light (see Psalm 36:9).

You may not be able to “see” God, but without question, he sees you (see Psalm 139:16-18). So why stumble in the darkness when almighty God stands ready to lead you out into the light?

GOD’S PROMISE TO ME
• Darkness is not dark to me.

• I am light, and those who walk with me live in the light.

MY PRAYER TO GOD
Heavenly Father, may your Word and your truth be a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
