God Hears The Cries Of The Destitute
He will respond to the prayer of the destitute; he will not despise their plea.
Psalm 102:17
To hear some tell it, God wants all believers to be financially prosperous.
Such an idea sounds wonderful. Unfortunately it isn’t Biblical (not if you take into account all of God’s Word), nor does it square with the experience of the godly down through the ages. Saints frequently do without. Saints often suffer. Perhaps even you? Perhaps even today?
Psalm 102 is a moving meditation for believers in crisis. The historical background of this song is unknown. Some sort of enemy seemed to be approaching Jerusalem with evil intent. In this disturbing situation, the frightened and needy psalmist poured out his heart to God. Then, he found comfort in remembering God’s care and concern.
One promise—the one above—sticks out. It is not a guarantee of riches, only the assurance that God hears and answers the prayers of his people when they are right on the edge.
GOD’S PROMISE TO ME
• I hear the prayers of the poor.
• I will give you what you need.
MY PRAYER TO GOD
Lord, you hear the prayers of those in financial crisis. I thank you that you know all about my current situation. Show me if I am being disciplined or if this is merely an opportunity to trust you and grow in faith.
