God Is Sovereign
Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.
2 Chronicles 29:11
Sovereignty means complete authority. So if God is sovereign, do human beings really have any choice? The truth is that God is sovereign and yet somehow he also gives us freedom to choose. That’s what the two trees in the garden of Eden were about (see Genesis 3). God did not need to put the forbidden tree there, but he desired that people would love and obey him because they chose to. Yet God, being sovereign, knows all things. Did he know that Adam and Eve would choose wrongly? Of course. Does he know everything you have done and will do? Of course. Somehow beyond our comprehension is the fact that we have a choice, yet God still knows everything. Both can be true at the same time because God is sovereign.
Many people try to fit God into some kind of box so they can say they understand him. But God is beyond understanding. If he weren’t, he wouldn’t be God. Can we comprehend his sovereignty? No, but we can praise him for it. God’s sovereignty would be frightening if we did not know that God is also loving. His rule is loving and just. That can give us all great peace.
GOD’S PROMISE TO ME
• I am perfectly sovereign.
• You can trust in and take comfort in my sovereignty—for I am also good, loving, faithful and merciful.
MY PRAYER TO GOD
Lord, yours is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory and the majesty. I adore you as the One who is over all things.
