God Is Tender Toward You

God Is Tender Toward You

[The Lord] tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.
Isaiah 40:11

Some of the Bible’s verbal pictures of God provoke healthy awe and reverence: Creator (see Isaiah 40:28 and Ephesians 3:9); Ruler (see 2 Chronicles 20:6); Lord (see Exodus 3:14-20); Ruler (see Psalm 22:28 and Isaiah 6:5); Judge (see Psalm 94:2).

Other Biblical portraits provide a strong sense of hope and safety: Redeemer (see Isaiah 44:24); Father (see Psalm 103:13).

But perhaps one of the most comforting and familiar descriptions of God is that of Shepherd, the metaphor used by the prophet Isaiah in the promise above.

The overall meaning is clear. God is protective and alert. He is proactive on our behalf, always seeking our best and providing for us. But notice also the words and phrases “close to his heart,” and “gently.” Can you think of a more comforting description of God anywhere in the Bible?

The Good Shepherd shows great tenderness to his lambs—which means you. You are close to his heart.

GOD’S PROMISE TO ME
• I will feed you and lead you.

• I will carry you in my arms.

• I will hold you close to my heart.

MY PRAYER TO GOD
Shepherd of heaven, you faithfully feed and guide your flock. Thank you for your protection and provision. You are gentle, and you hold me in your arms. What an amazing promise! When I am afraid, worried or tired, remind me that you desire to carry me with all tenderness.
