God Sets You Free From Terror

For I hear many whisperings, “Terror on every side!” They conspire against me and plot to take my life. But I trust in you, LORD; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me.

Lots of days we feel some measure of “minor concern.” Occasionally we experience “serious anxiety.” Then, there are those times when we are overcome by “outright panic.” A 3 a.m. phone call, a heart-stopping lab result, an unexpected pink slip. In those terrifying moments it’s as though the earth has given way beneath us and we’re free-falling to certain doom.

If you’ve ever had a full-fledged panic attack, you know how David was tempted to feel in Psalm 31. He was a man in the crosshairs of numerous enemies and rivals. Despite his deep faith, he wrestled with an ominous and imminent sense of dread.

But rather than giving in to wild thoughts and out-of-control emotions, David chose to trust in God’s control over all things.

God, I could make a career out of being terrified by potential trouble. It’s a scary world out there. Bad things happen all the time. But I choose to trust you, Lord, and not give in to the temptation to panic.
