The Book
9. So Moses wrote this entire body of instruction in a book and gave it to the priests, who carried the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant, and to the elders of Israel.
10. Then Moses gave them this command: “At the end of every seventh year, the Year of Release, during the Festival of Shelters,
11. you must read this Book of Instruction to all the people of Israel when they assemble before the Lord your God at the place he chooses.
12. Call them all together—men, women, children, and the foreigners living in your towns—so they may hear this Book of Instruction and learn to fear the Lord your God and carefully obey all the terms of these instructions.
13. Do this so that your children who have not known these instructions will hear them and will learn to fear the Lord your God. Do this as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy.” Deuteronomy 31:9-13

Books can entertain, educate, edify, and enrage. Well-written books draw us along, page by page, till the end. What memories do you have of books? What feelings do you have toward books?
This section constitutes Moses’ last words of advice, and includes several points about reading (even singing) God’s Book aloud. This isn’t mere formality; it’s a necessity.
Changes in leadership are sensitive times. Don’t miss what happens here because it’s Moses’ last opportunity to impart God’s word.
This passage touches on at least two additional topics to be aware of: music as a part of life with God, and differences in God’s blessings to different people.
Moses commanded the Israelites to read God’s laws to the whole assembly so that everyone, including the children, could hear them (Deuteronomy 31:10-13). Every seven years the entire nation would gather together and listen as a priest read the law to them. There were no books or Bibles to pass around, so the people had to rely on word of mouth and an accurate memory. Memorization was an important part of worship, because if everyone knew the law, ignorance would be no excuse for breaking the law.
To fulfill God’s purpose and will in our lives, we need the content and substance of his Word in our hearts and minds. For the Hebrews, this process began in childhood.
If you are resistant or feel awkward about leading family devotions, simply read the Bible to your children. There are Bibles available in English for all ages—storybooks for the youngest children, simple translations for early readers, and Bibles designed especially for young people and teenagers. Teaching your children (and new believers) should be one of your top priorities.
