The Ultimate Power
Read Hebrews 1:1–2:18
1. Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets.
2. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.
3. The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.
4. This shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is greater than their names.
5. For God never said to any angel what he said to Jesus: “You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.” God also said, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son.” Hebrews 1:1-5
The United States of America was established so that people can have a say in how they are governed. But as soon as many of the elected officials take office, it seems that the citizens who elected them can forget about hearing from them until the next election. Perhaps, for most politicians, the will of the people is easier to forget than the power of the press. This confusion of command makes it impossible to know who really is in charge of the country—the people, the politicians, or the media.
Many who spend their time trying to figure out who is in control down here overlook the one who is in control of everything—Jesus. In this reading, the writer of Hebrews reminds readers that just because Jesus is seated in heaven does not mean that he is unaware or uninvolved in the events on earth. As you read and think of current events, remember that your sovereign and all-powerful Lord reigns.
Sometimes the chaos, violence, immorality, and evil of this world can cloud our vision of Jesus’ reign. Yet Christ does rule in heaven, and everything on earth belongs to him. He is King, even if all his subjects do not yet obey him. This is Christ’s world. He has control of it.
If you want to affect the world, talk to Jesus about it. Christ’s reign on earth has not yet begun, but his rule from heaven is no less real. When you are confused by present events and grow anxious about the future, remember Jesus’ true position and authority. He is Lord of all, and one day he will rule on earth as he does now in heaven (see Matthew 6:10).
