He Needs You, Too

Then at the proper time Jesus and the twelve apostles sat down together at the table. Jesus said, “I have looked forward to this hour with deep longing, anxious to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins.” Luke 22:14-15

At the Last Supper, Jesus expressed his desire to be surrounded by his friends. It wasn’t a casual comment but rather an expression of “deep longing.” Jesus was approaching the time of his crucifixion and his beloved disciples would be a comfort to him. Perhaps before that moment, the disciples had not realized that Jesus needed them because he was the One who had always given. He had taught them, led them, and poured himself like an offering over their lives. What did they have to offer? As they sat around the table, they realized that there was something they could give back to their Savior—themselves. Have you ever stopped to consider God’s longing for you? It may seem impossible for us to think in these terms, especially in light of what God has done for us. But God created each of us to commune with him. Jesus longs to be one with his own. We may feel as if we have little to offer God. It is easy to forget that God longs for our presence just as we long for his. Take time to open your heart and commune with God as a friend today. He’s waiting for you.

Prayers:
LORD, you have done so much for me. I often think I have nothing to offer you. The thought that you long for my friendship is almost overwhelming because you’ve given so much and I’ve given so little. I love to be in your presence. I rejoice that you want to be with me. Help me to devote a portion of each day to communion with you.

Quotes:
As our love is the best thing we have, and none deserves it more than God, so let him have our love, yea, the strength of our love, that we may love him with all our souls, and with all our mind, and with all our strength.
Richard Sibbs (1577–1635)
