Remembering to Bless

One day David began wondering if anyone in Saul’s family was still alive, for he had promised Jonathan that he would show kindness to them. He summoned a man named Ziba, who had been one of Saul’s servants. “Are you Ziba?” the king asked. “Yes sir, I am,” Ziba replied. The king then asked him, “Is anyone still alive from Saul’s family? If so, I want to show God’s kindness to them in any way I can.” 2 Samuel 9:1-3

Have you ever remembered a friendship from long ago and decided to do something to reconnect with that friend? At some point King David remembered a past relationship and a promise he had made to Saul’s son Jonathan years before (1 Samuel 20:14-15). After inquiring, he discovered Jonathan’s crippled son Mephibosheth was living in Lo-debar. King David had him brought to the palace to his royal table, gave him the inheritance from his grandfather Saul, and showered him with blessings. David restored to Mephibosheth everything that had belonged to Saul and his family. David’s whole motivation was to keep his promise to Jonathan to show God’s kindness to Jonathan’s family in any way he could.

Is there someone from the past, a friend or family member, that you could show God’s kindness to? Have you forgotten a promise you made or failed to keep a commitment to pray for someone? We may not have the resources to offer the sort of lavish kindness David showered on Mephibosheth, but one kind act may change a person’s life. As someone once said, kindness turns more sinners to Christ than knowledge or zeal ever could!

Prayers:
LORD, bring to my remembrance people I have forgotten and those you would have me intercede for or provide for. When I make a commitment or a promise to someone, please help me to fulfill it quickly so that I don’t forget to do it. Remind me often that you never fail to fulfill all of your promises to me!

Quotes:
I expect to pass through life but once. If therefore, there be any kindness that I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again.
Stephen Grellet (1773–1855)
