Size-Twelve Shoes

Moses called for Joshua, and as all Israel watched he said to him, “Be strong and courageous! For you will lead these people into the land that the Lord swore to give their ancestors. You are the one who will deliver it to them as their inheritance. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord is the one who goes before you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:7-8

Have you ever been asked to follow in the footsteps of someone that you respect as a leader? If you have, then you may know something about how Joshua felt as he stood before Moses. Joshua understood the enormity of the task before him. He had watched Moses enter the tent of meeting, burdened and heavy laden, to seek guidance and strength from God. He had heard the murmuring among the people. He had participated in the battles. Would he be able to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land without the guidance of Moses? Whether Joshua felt capable and ready or not, it was time.

When God calls you to assume leadership, you may feel inadequate, as if you are placing size-nine feet in size-twelve shoes. Take heart. Just as the Lord assured Moses and Joshua, his promises are for your encouragement today. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor forsake you. Remember, you are not filling a person’s shoes; rather, you are placing your feet in the footsteps of the One who called you. With God’s help, you can do it!

Prayers:
LORD, thank you for trusting me to lead others. Help me to trust you each step of the way. When I encounter difficulties, may I carry my burden to you so that you may dispense wisdom and counsel. When the task seems too great, help me to trust you to show me the way. Thank you for going before me. I will follow your footsteps as you lead me one step at a time. I will not be afraid or discouraged, because I know that you are right beside me.

Quotes:
A true and safe leader is likely to be one who has no desire to lead but is forced into a position of leadership by the inward pressure of the Holy Spirit and the press of the external situation.
A. W. Tozer (1897–1963)
