The Anchor of Our Souls

The Anchor of Our Souls

God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind. So God has given us both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can take new courage, for we can hold on to his promise with confidence. This confidence is like a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. Hebrews 6:17-19

Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, sniper attacks the following year, bombings, school violence, upheaval in the stock market, and the downfall of once-solid major corporations, surveys showed the majority of Americans had lost their sense of security. As human beings, we long for security. The more the world seems out of control, the greater our need for an anchor, for something to hold on to and trust in. But our security and anchor aren’t going to come from the government, from the economy, or from any other circumstances. Today’s verses tell us that God has provided a rock-solid, strong, and trustworthy anchor for our souls. That anchor is our hope in Christ and our confidence in God’s promises to us. Just as God’s covenant with Abraham enabled him to persevere and gave him the courage to wait patiently for what God had promised, we can wait for the fulfillment of all God has promised us as we meditate on his Word and put our faith in Jesus.

Prayers:
LORD, thank you for providing something to hold on to when everything in this world seems to be shaking. My hope in Jesus is an anchor for my soul and will keep me steady in all the storms of life. Thank you for the promise that those who flee to you for refuge can take new courage because your promises are true and you never break your word!

Quotes:
Through this dark and stormy night Faith beholds a feeble light Up the blackness streaking; Knowing God’s own time is best, In a patient hope I rest For the full day-breaking!
John Greenleaf Whittier (1807–1892)
