The Engraving of His Word

The Engraving of His Word

They fill their hearts with God’s law, so they will never slip from his path. Psalm 37:31

As we see the day approaching when Christ will return in glory, this psalm grows from being instructional or insightful—which is important, of course—to being vital in our spiritual lives. The Holy Spirit’s daily engraving of his Word on our hearts is imperative if we are to continue walking on the steep path through the narrow gate that leads to life.

A wood burner literally engraves or burns its mark down into the grain of the wood, leaving a permanent imprint. So should the law of God be engraved in our hearts. When we read and meditate on his Word with teachable hearts, the Holy Spirit will engrave his truths into our lives so that it, too, leaves a permanent imprint of God and his love for us. Although we veer at times from its counsel, the love and grace of the Father will lead us back to that truth that he has etched so deeply into our hearts.

Prayers:
LORD, help me to fill my heart with your law so that I may never slip from your path. Engrave your truths into my heart and mind so that your love and mercy are forever imprinted in my life. Keep my feet on the path that leads to life so that I am prepared for your glorious return.

Quotes:
ONE OF THE HIGHEST AND NOBLEST FUNCTIONS OF MAN’S MIND IS TO LISTEN TO GOD’S WORD, AND SO TO READ HIS MIND AND THINK HIS THOUGHTS AFTER HIM.
John R. W. Stott (b. 1921)
