The Voice of the Lord

The Voice of the Lord

The voice of the Lord echoes above the sea. The God of glory thunders. The Lord thunders over the mighty sea. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord splits the mighty cedars. . . . The voice of the Lord twists mighty oaks and strips the forests bare. Psalm 29:3-5, 9

Our God has a powerful voice. He “approaches with the noise of thunder” (Psalm 50:3). He spoke, and the world was created. He spoke, and there appeared light and all creatures, great and small. And just as he created everything by his word, he also controls everything by his word. His voice is not weak or easily drowned out; it thunders over the loudest ocean or the raging storm. It is so powerful that it splits the mighty cedars and strips the forests of their foliage. Throughout the Bible we see him speaking in many different ways: through angels, through visions and dreams, through a mighty storm, and through a gentle whisper to our hearts. But are we listening, or have we forgotten how? Do we know only how to talk to God? If we want to see miracles in our lives and in our loved ones’ lives, if we want to become all God created us to be, we must listen and follow what the Lord says. For he is still speaking today, and his voice is powerful!

Prayers:
LORD, I’m thankful that you aren’t silent, that your voice thunders over the whole earth. But it’s easy to become distracted and fail to listen for your leading. Remove anything that is clogging my spiritual ears so that I might hear your powerful voice. And make me willing and quick to obey.

Quotes:
GOD THE FATHER IS BOTH FAR AWAY AND NEAR AT HAND; HIS VOICE IS, AT ONCE, DEAFENING IN ITS THUNDEROUSNESS, AND TOO STILL AND SMALL TO BE EASILY AUDIBLE.
Malcolm Muggeridge (1903–1990)
