Wake Up!

Wake Up!

My heart is confident in you, O God; no wonder I can sing your praises! Wake up, my soul! Wake up, O harp and lyre! I will waken the dawn with my song. Psalm 108:1-2

Many times I have read, “I will waken the dawn with my song,” and have longed to do this very thing. But as a young mother up all night with three sick little ones, as a mother of teenagers keeping late hours studying, and more recently as a grandmother helping to care for a fourteen-month-old while his mom was in the hospital, how can I wake up early to spend time with God? Only by asking him for the energy, the desire, and the power to do so: Lord, cause me to hear your voice calling to me each day. Open my heart to respond to your Spirit. Yes, we are weak, frail, and often tired, but God promises his strength in our weakness. This is not simply a matter of waking up at a certain hour to fulfill our Christian duty and have our devotions; it is a cry to passionately, consistently seek the Lord before the day crushes in with all its responsibilities. Even before we raise our heads off the pillow, we can express our love to the Lord and commit the day to him. Ask for the help of his Spirit, and look to him to work it out.

Prayers:
THANK YOU, LORD, for always calling me to draw near to you. That is my desire, so I look to you to work within me the power and energy to rise morning by morning to meet you. My heart is confident in you, O God. No wonder I can sing your praises! This day, before the duties of the day rush in, I give myself to you and say, “Arise, my soul!”

Quotes:
The sun does no choosing. God chooses— every morning so far—to make it rise. Yet the Lord of the universe asks me to choose to follow Him—to participate, as Christ did, in the flowing action which is his will. —
Elisabeth Elliot
